New Maternal Mortality Estimates

April 16, 2010

New global maternal mortality estimates published by the Lancet this week show a substantial decrease in deaths, from 526,300 in 1980 to 342,900 in 2008.  The report also estimates that more than 50% of all maternal deaths in 2008 occurred in six countries: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The finds are however being widely discussed among maternal health organisations, health experts, and partnerships.  It’ll be interesting to follow the debate over the next weeks, leading up to Women Deliver.
