Meet Mariana Salgado
Mariana Salgado works as Senior Design Researcher at M4ID. Having joined us in April, Mariana focuses on designing publication strategies, writing and selecting content in relation to design studies and framing design research results into different publication formats. She specializes in participatory design and co-design practices within service and interaction design processes.
Mariana has extensive experience as design researcher working in service and interaction design. She has been involved in co-designing participation with vulnerable communities, such as immigrants and refugees. She holds a bachelor in Industrial Design from the University of Buenos Aires (1998), Argentina; a Master in Product and Strategic design from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki (2002) and a Doctoral degree from Media Lab Helsinki, Aalto University (2009), Finland.
Mariana, through your work, you’re bringing a design research perspective into M4ID’s social change projects – what’s the most exciting thing about your job?
”There are a lot of opportunities for design researchers that aim to work towards social justice, as social design as a field is consolidating and there is a growing acknowledgement of the contribution that designers could bring to low resource contexts. I’m very excited to be able to work with the M4ID team on health projects that will have a meaningful impact in people’s everyday life. Also, I am learning a lot from my colleagues that have longer experience in the field.”
Co-design and participatory design are close to your heart. What’s your next professional dream?
“I hope we can bring co-design into new horizons, this is why I travel often to Latin America and actively participate in design discussions there. I also put efforts in publishing in Spanish, as a way to disseminate design research and enhance the collaboration with my colleagues on the other side of the pond.”
An Argentina native, Mariana is involved in activities with many Spanish speaking groups in the Nordics. Mariana loves to swim in open waters specially in the long summer nights in Helsinki. She also enjoys biking with her family and experimental theater.
