Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

UN Women's campaign celebrates female human rights pioneers
December 10, 2015

“As we know, no gains are made without a struggle. We are standing today on the shoulders of many of our sisters who fought for the rights we have today. We owe them a huge debt and we owe it to them to continue that struggle.”

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women

As we gear up to celebrate today’s Human Rights Day, M4ID is thrilled to unveil a new social media campaign for UN Women that celebrates the diversity of voices in the global struggle for equality and human rights.

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December, commemorating the 1948 day on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

You can’t be what you can’t see – Focus on female role models in human rights

Gender equality, women’s rights and women’s empowerment are central to achieving the Declaration’s vision of an equal world, yet there remains work to be done in closing the gender gap around the world.

In addition to addressing structural barriers to gender equality, a part of the effort to balance the scales is to celebrate women’s history and the brave female activists who stood up for their rights in adverse environments. To close the gender gap once and for all, we need role models to educate, inspire and encourage.

UN Women’s campaign, Find Your Inner Women’s Right Activist, draws attention to the many who came before us and presents 20 fascinating human rights activists from different times and places. Take the test and find your personal match amongst these great women.
