Global Time Spent on Social Media Sites up by 82%
According to the recent report by Nielsen, in December 2009, global Internet users spent more than 5,5 hours on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. This is an 82% increase from 2008 when users spent just over 3 hours on these sites during December month. Moreover, overall traffic to social networking sites has grown continuously over the last three years, as the graph below illustrates.
Globally, social networks and blogs are the most popular online category, followed by online games and instant messaging (ranked by average time users spent on the sites in December 2009). Facebook was the no. 1 global website with 206.9 m unique visitors, accounting for 67% of global social media users. Time spent on Facebook has also been on the rise, in some regions now exceeding 6 hours per month (U.S).
