Facebook – the future of Charity Shops?
There’s speculation that Facebook will develop a new universal currency, Facebook credits, which could be used to buy physical, not just virtual gifts, as has been the case so far. The social networking site is also currently experimenting with charity gifts. Although the development of a merchant platform is still at the alpha stage, and only a few charities (including WWF) as well as a limited number of users are included at this point, the future potential is tremendous. Giving charity presents offline is very popular and people are already supporting various causes through social networks (the Facebook Causes application alone has approximately 30 m users). soon charity shopping could be a lot easier for Facebook’s 350 million users. This could be a great additional tool for non-profits on Facebook and yet another way of translating social web activity into real life show of support.
