CDC leading the way
We follow with interest and excitement the US Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) use of social media. Some of the new approaches to health promotion include recently launched eCards through which people can send greetings, while sharing health related messages.. they’ve also opened a virtual flu clinic on Whyville.net, a site that explains a wide range of topics for children. Though still viewed as pilot projects, they’re already achieving good results, for example, CDC reports that 135,000 individuals visited the virtual clinic, leading to 20,000 vaccinations in a six-week period. The health agency is also expanding its presence in Second Life, where it’s going to be hosting virtual health workshops, as well as having opened up a CDC page on MySpace. In addition, they are using widgets, linking with recognized bloggers on health, testing e-games and sending health alerts via mobile phones.
Great to see technology put to work for public health.
